Are you ready to see the best Super Mario Bros movie to date? No, we’re not talking about the live-action disaster from 1993. We’re talking about the anime film Super Mario Bros. – The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! that was only released in Japan. Now international audiences finally have the chance to check out this lost and rare Mario film for themselves.

Super Mario Bros. – The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! was first released in 1986 in Japan. The film was heavily marketed and had a VHS release after its theatre run. However, none of this content made its way overseas. If you wanted to check out Super Mario Bros. – The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! for yourself, you’d have to find a torrent or a bootleg of it. And even if you did, the odds of the quality being any good were probably low. Now, Femboy Films, a Patreon-funded group that restores old media, collaborated with Carnivol to bring us this lost Mario film in stunning 4k with scratches removed, color matching from the source manga, soundtrack restoration, and more. Best of all, you can watch this new version online for free! You can see the movie below:

Super Mario Bros. – The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! was produced by Nintendo and Grouper Productions. It featured Mario and Luigi heading on a mission to rescue Peach from Bowser. Tōru Furuya played Mario and Yū Mizushima played Luigi. Furuya is best known for his voice work on Dragonball Z, One Piece, and Sailor Moon while Mizushima is known for his voice work on Parasyte. Furuya also voiced the plumber in the video games before Charles Martinet took over for all Mario games in 1998. Masami Hata directed the film. Hata is best known for his direction on Sea Prince and Fire Child and Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland.

It’s always great to see quality media like Super Mario Bros. – The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! get a second life. It gives fans of Mario a new treasured movie to watch that would have previously been incredibly difficult to access. Plus, this movie is likely going to be a great alternative to those who dislike the direction the new animated Mario movie will be taking. Nintendo and Illumination announced their upcoming Mario film that will star Chris Pratt as the titular plumber. Other cast members include Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Seth Rogen, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and more. Though the casting for the movie has led many to scratch their heads, at least they cast the voice of Mario and many other characters, Charles Martinet, to have some cameos in the movie.

Whether you like the new Mario movie or not Super Mario Bros. – The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! will be a free option that you’ll always have the chance to revisit if you’re looking for a good Mario movie.
