People were starting to have fears that comic book movies may experience a backlash soon. That so many have come out and been so similar to every other one, that audiences would turn their back on the genre. Thing is, with its huge haul this weekend, The Amazing Spiderman 2 has shown us all just the opposite. The world still loves its superhero movies, which is good news to a nerd like me.
Amazing Spiderman 2 pulled in 96 million dollars its opening weekend, officially kicking off the season of Summer blockbusters. While it didn’t break any records, if definitely is off to a stellar start. My bet is wait until next weekend when Godzilla comes out. I think that it will destroy the money made by Spiderman by at least another 50 million first weekend. It’s funny, with home theaters getting better and better, the movie industry was scared of losing profit over time. I think The Amazing Spiderman 2 just gave them some peace of mind.
I will just be curious to see how the rest of the massive Summer movies do in the wake of Spiderman’s good numbers. Personally, I think the movie looks like a lot of fun, but I won’t go spend 20 bucks in the theater fun. I have a home theater and a great sense of patience. Welcome to superhero season, people. We still have X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy coming, so it could be the best Summer for comic book movies yet!
