Shortly before the non-tender deadline, the Boston Red Sox pulled off a trade Friday, sending second baseman Luis Urías to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for reliever Isaiah Campbell.

Campbell, a 26-year-old right-hander, posted a 2.83 ERA and 27.5 percent strikeout rate in 27 appearances over 28 2/3 innings in his rookie season for the Mariners this year.

The right-hander was one of eight rookies last season to make at least 25 appearances and post an ERA below 3.00. In 61 minor-league games, including four starts, he posted a 2.01 ERA. A native of Portugal, Campbell was selected by Seattle in Competitive Balance Round B of the 2019 MLB Draft.

Campbell adds depth to the Red Sox bullpen in a move that allowed the team to add to the roster rather than release Urías for no return. Urías had been a strong non-tender candidate with a projected salary of $4.7 million.

Urías arrived in Boston at the trade deadline from Milwaukee and hit .225 with a .698 OPS in 109 plate appearances.

As the Red Sox seek to upgrade their infield defense, they’re in the market for a right-handed-hitting middle infielder. Though chief baseball officer Craig Breslow had mentioned Urías among four internal options at second base alongside Enmanuel Valdéz, Pablo Reyes and David Hamilton, it became clear Urías’ salary could be better applied elsewhere on the roster.

The Red Sox also non-tendered right-hander Wyatt Mills, making him a free agent.

Boston’s 40-man roster is now at 37. The Mariners’ 40-man roster is at 40.
