From California to Minnesota, there’s a clothing-optional beach for everyone. But before you head out into the surf with nothing on but a smile and SPF cream, here are a few things you should know

While only about 5% of Americans admit to having been to one, America is home to a wealth of clothing optional beaches.

Whether you fancy a hike to the beautiful, secluded Cedar Lake Beach in Minnesota or prefer to let it all hang out within driving distance of the city at San Francisco’s Baker Beach, there are plenty of options for career nudists and amateurs alike to enjoy the sun and sand in their birthday suits.

But before heading out into the surf with nothing but a smile and SPF cream to protect you, there are a few things you should know.

First, your delicate unmentionables are more likely to burn than the rest of you. While there’s not much additional benefit in Sun Protection Factor over 50, you should be liberally (and frequently) applying something that’s at least SPF 30.

Next, not all nude beaches are for nudists. It’s common to have clothing-optional areas at an otherwise standard beach. Pay attention to signage so you’re not accidentally wandering your way from “comfortable nude tourist” to “unwanted naked person near previously relaxed families”. Further to this point: towel etiquette is important. If you’re going to sit somewhere, put a towel down first.

Finally, while some glancing is understandable, outright gawking at naked bathers is considered gauche. Try to avoid staring, or wear very dark sunglasses if you must.

This summer, consider shedding your insecurities along with that saggy old bathing suit.

Where to go

  • Maui, where Little Beach is a famed naked party spot.
  • If you’re looking for something a little quieter, San Gregorio is America’s oldest nude beach.
  • California is home to a slew of nudist-friendly beaches, including popular surf spot Black’s Beach, which has been known to feature naked surfers.
  • A nude beach roundup wouldn’t be complete without the inclusion of Miami’s Haulover Beach, a year-round white sand oasis with all the tanned butts you can handle.
