He went to the Round Valley High School and, encouraged by his father, Mark began playing football. After one season he transferred to Arizona State University, where he also played for one season, before eventually becoming a student of East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma., and while there he was rewarded with Outstanding Defensive Lineman honors for the North in the 1979 Senior Bowl.

For the next 10 seasons, Mark played for the Jets, and has left a permanent mark in both franchise and league history; his career saw a slow start as he recorded only 2 sacks in his first 16 games, however, the next season was his breakout one, as he had 11.5 sacks. In 1981 he set his career high with 20 sacks, but that record was later broken in 1984, when he had 22 sacks. Until 1988 he recorded a total of 107.5 sacks which made him one of the best defensive players in the league. Unfortunately he was forced to retire after several injuries, and also needed more time to dedicate to his wife who was battling with cancer.
Two years later he signed a contract with the Canadian football league team BC Lions, but after only four games, he was released by the club`s officials.
