Kim Kardashian has finally revealed the origin story behind her six-year-old daughter North West’s name. In a video that was posted to Kylie Jenner’s YouTube channel, Kardashian explained that she decided to name her firstborn North after a visit to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2013 when she was pregnant.
“I actually got it from Jay Leno, who made that as a joke,” Kim told Kylie. “Everyone was coming up to me like, ‘It’s such a cool name. You should really think about it,’”
The 39-year-old said that it took “four or five days” to land on the name, and she explained that she was telling the truth when she told Leno during the interview that the rumors about naming her daughter “North” weren’t true after he jokingly asked about it.
Kardashian told him that there were a lot of rumors swirling about her and Kanye West’s first born child, and “that is not one of the names on the list.” Leno’s joke was actually the first time she heard the name, and she told the comedian that her number one choice for a name at the time was “Easton.”
Still, Kardashian still wasn’t immediately convinced. But, after she talked to Pharrell Williams – and he explained all of the meanings for the word – she ended up changing her mind. The KKW Beauty founder added that kids “really become the name you name them,” and the name “North” fits her daughter perfectly.
Kardashian also shared how her other three kids got their names. She said that Kanye West came up with the name “Saint,” who is now 4, and is Kardashian and West’s oldest son. For two-year-old Chicago, Kardashian said that name took her two weeks to come up with.
Kim Kardashian also revealed that Kylie came up with eight-month-old Psalm’s name, but the Lip Kit mogul said, “Well, you thought of it. I vouched for it.”
According to People magazine, an insider claims that Psalm’s name came from West’s renewed Christian faith.
“Kanye has been going through a spiritual revival lately. Every name has a meaning that is personal between Kanye and Kim and the child,” the source said. “Psalm is a good reflection of where Kanye and Kim are spiritually.”

The insider said that West loves the Books of Poetry in the Bible – Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon – and he “reads them over and over.” Psalms the longest book in the Bible, and Kanye West believes there is a lot of wisdom to be found in the verses.
