Joseph had attended The Lawrenceville School, a coeducational preparatory school for boarding and day students in Mercer County, New Jersey. He played both lacrosse and American football there. After his high school graduation in 1982, he enrolled at his father’s alma mater, Yale University, a private research university in New Haven, Connecticut.

He played for the university’s lacrosse team for 4 years and has remained its supporter ever since. He earned a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) degree in economics and East Asian studies from Yale College, the undergraduate college of Yale University, in 1986.

He joined Yale Law School, the law school of Yale University, in 1987. In 1990, he graduated from there with a J.D. (Juris Doctor) degree. At Yale Law School, he was the articles editor of the Yale Law & Policy Review, a biannual student-run law review covering the intersection of law and policy.

  • His parents and their families had escaped to Taiwan in 1949 as part of the Kuomintang exodus after the communists took over control of mainland China during the Chinese civil war.
  • Joseph was born in Taipei City, the capital of Taiwan, in 1964, and when he was 13 years old, he was sent to the United States to attend the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey.
  • After graduating from Yale Law School in 1990, he became a tax associate at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, an American multinational law firm headquartered in New York City. He was admitted as an attorney to the New York bar in May 1991.
