On Thursday, Iggy Azalea premiered her new song “Mo Bounce” on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show, discussing her latest track and soon-to-be-released studio LP Digital Distortion.
“It’s probably the most fun record on my album,” she spilled about The Stereotypes-produced song, co-written by Kev Nish of Far East Movement. Azalea’s sole concern was being able to “twerk” in a video. That twerking-focused visual will be available as soon as Friday.
“I like being polarizing,” the 26-year-old dished about her music. “I came out the gate with a song about my vagina, you know? So, you can’t expect to not be polarizing and that’s always what I’ve like to do. I’ve always liked to push the limits and I think I got to a place where I felt scared almost to piss people off. Or, that I was pissing so many people off that I wanted to tame it. But in doing so, I feel like what people like about then there was nothing even for them to like.”
Azaela’s rise to fame wasn’t something she was immediately able to get accustomed to. “I didn’t expect to get a number 1 hit, I never thought I would have that level of success as a female rapper because it’s really, really hard,” she spilled to Lowe. “And, I just kind of thought, if I could skate by and make a living of it and do a few shows, that was kind of my expectation. It ended up being way, way bigger than that. That level of attention is very claustrophobic and it kind of makes your decision-making sort of whacked out.”
Initially, the Australian rapper planned to express herself through the new record in a serious matter. But, before its completion, she called it quits with fiancée Nick Young. Because of the sudden split, the old album was no longer capable of Azalea’s characterization. This led to its demolish and regrowth.
“I think the first album, that I scrapped, was definitely very aggressive and angry and abrasive and that’s how I felt at the time.It was when I was in the pitfalls of controversy and my career was fallen off a cliff and I didn’t really know what was going on with that or if I felt like I wanted to make music. I felt angry about certain things and it was in my music, which is good, but I just don’t feel that way anymore.”
Azalea also stressed the enjoyment of her newly-single self and frequent good moods. “Mo Bounce” reflects that attitude through its demanding lyrics, upbeat tempo and catchy delivery. She was inspired by EDM music and chose to go in a similar direction when executively producing the soon-to-be-released album.
“I know it’s been a long wait for my album,” the “Fancy” songstress wrote on Twitter earlier this month, hoping her fans would understand the personal changes her life has been filled with.“I felt it was important I made some creative changes too and needed my album to reflect where my head’s at in 2017.”
Although an official release date for Digital Distortion is unknown, Azalea confirmed that the record has been completed aside from minor technical aspects.
