Dedric Willoughby, a former Hall of Fame basketball player at Iowa State, passed away on Wednesday night while performing his craft. He died while shooting hoops.
A point guard for the Cyclones under Tim Floyd from 1995 to 1997, who later played for Floyd with the Chicago Bulls. Willoughby passed away while playing pick-up basketball close to his Atlanta home.
Floyd, who revealed that Willoughby passed away from a heart attack, said, “Dedric really meant so much to my coaching career and our team.
He had one of the fastest shot releases of anyone I had ever coached, whether they were in college or the NBA. Incredible intensity. He was the fastest shooter I saw from three points away, which was a remarkable talent.
Willoughby averaged 19.8 points per game and became the first player in Iowa State men’s basketball history to score 1,000 points in just two seasons of play.
In 1997, after ranking fourth nationally in 3-pointers made per game (3.8), he was named an All-American.
Willoughby, who was twice named to the All-Big Eight team, was the Big Eight Tournament’s MVP and helped the Cyclones win the conference title in 1996.
After his second season, I went to go to Iowa State, and his mother called me,” Floyd recalled. “She said, ‘When you recruited him, you said that you’re going to take care of him, so I expect you to take him with you to Iowa State.'”

Guard Willoughby, who stands 6’3″, started his collegiate basketball career at the University of New Orleans before transferring to Iowa State. Tim Floyd was his coach at both institutions.
Willoughby finished second in the voting for the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year in each of his two seasons at Iowa State. He scored 18.9 points per game on average as a senior and connected on 45% of his three-point shots.
Willoughby, who had previously played professionally in Italy, was reunited with coach Tim Floyd when he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls for the 1999–2000 NBA season.
He started one game out of 25 appearances that season, scoring 7.6 points on average.
